The Hazards of Continued Coal-Burning
Wednesday evening, February 25th, 7:30PM
Bloomfield Civic Center
The Essex County Greens held an open public forum on the issue of coal--why it is dirty and dangerous and must become an energy source of the past as we move towards a green, clean energy economy. The audience was small, but enthusiastic. Many signed a clean water petition, sponsored by Blue Wave.
The primary speaker was Montclair Environmental Coordinator Gray Russell. Jane Califf spoke of the massive civil disobedience action against coal being planned for March 2nd in Washington, D.C. (http://www.capitolclimateaction.org). Top
Founder, Ted Glick explains why we need to move beyond our reliance on coal. "There are numeous problems with this energy source. It pollutes water in the areas where it is mined and the air everywhere. Mountain top removal and coal ash and sludge spills, as we saw in Tennessee during the holidays, are terrible things for the environment. Coal mining is a threat to the health and safety of coal miners. And it is far and away the worst of the fossil fuels that are heating up our atmosphere. It is long past time to power past coal." This action is part of a building series of actions all around the country as part of 100 Days of Action to Power Past Coal (http://www.powerpastcoal.org).
The forums are free (donations are accepted) and open to the public. For more information call 973-338-5398 or write indpol@igc.org.

“The mortgage crisis was preventable. Like most economic problems, it was due to corporate greed. Top executives at major banks, mortgage companies, and rating agencies saw an opportunity to increase corporate income and their own compensation by engaging in risky practices. Eventually, however, these perverse incentives caught up with them. Indeed, they put the entire financial system in jeopardy.” Top

Shouldn't health care be a right just as public education is? Shouldn't all Americans have the same total coverage that the U.S. Congress has?
You are invited to hear Dr. Winthop C. Dillaway III, MD, who has been speaking publicly for the past 5 years on behalf of the Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP). He will make an impassioned and well-reasoned case for a single-payer system which would provide universal coverage that is simple, economical and humane.Dr. Dillaway is on the faculty of Family Medicine at the New Jersey Medical School, both teaching and seeing clinic patients. Prior to medical school, he served in the Peace Corps, and he has worked in Colombia and Mexico, and in the Bronx and Harlem. He also maintained a private practice of Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine for 20 years in Sussex County.
There will be ample time for questions, discussion and suggestions for action. Top
Support HR 676 (legislation that could replace our expensive, unfair and failed current system - good for healthcare insurers, bad for us).
